The City of London

Welcome

Welcome to Diversity City. Although we’re only just beginning, we hope quickly to establish this Web site as one of the most useful resources for news and information on diversity in the United Kingdom.

On this site we provide transcripts of interviews with leading British businesspersons and governmental officials, along with diversity experts from the United States, a country that officially has spent fifty years pursuing social inclusion. We also offer book reviews and articles on diversity, making it easy for readers to find the materials that best suit their needs.

We are confident that you will find our Web site both informative and easy to use. Welcome to Diversity City.

Celebrating Wilberforce and the Abolition of Slavery

2007 marks the bicentennial anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Britain and the slave trade across the Atlantic Ocean. British politicians of all the main political parties are participating in a series of events to commemorate this momentous event in British history. Prime Minister Tony Blair recently held a reception at 10 Downing Street to encourage charities, non-profits, and other “third sector” organizations to build upon this anniversary by embarking on new ventures.

"What we are trying to do is plan a whole series of activities in order to make it clear that this is something which we want to catch people's imaginations" Blair announced. He went on adding that this was "not just to remember things that happened 200 years ago but to remember ... the problems we still face today and how we've got to use some of that inspiration from that campaign 200 years ago to motivate us in dealing with these challenges now."

It is in this spirit that we’re launching Diversity City. Our Web site is a new e-"third sector” organization. We are passionate about encouraging opportunities for all people, regardless of their genders or ethnic backgrounds. By highlighting how diversity can enhance the bottom line, we help to show that companies can “do well by doing good”. Through innovation and creativity, we can bridge the gaps that historically have divided Britain.
